Understanding how filarial and hookworm parasites establish infection in their hosts

We are a research lab in the Department of Infectious Diseases at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine, studying how parasitic nematodes — canine heartworm, the agents of human lymphatic filariasis, and canine hookworm — establish infection in their hosts. We combine molecular parasitology, immunology, and genomics/transcriptomics to understand host specificity and drug resistance, and we work toward laboratory alternatives to animal models wherever we can.

Our lab also directs FR3, the NIH/NIAID-funded Filariasis Research Reagent Resource Center, which supplies filarial parasites, molecular reagents, and protocols to researchers around the world.

Dirofilaria immitis larval development, drug susceptibility, and host establishment.

Lymphatic filariasis

Host-specificity and immune interactions of human-infective filarial parasites.

Canine hookworm

Comparative host-parasite biology and resistance mechanisms in Ancylostoma species.

The Filariasis Research Reagent Resource Center (FR3) is an NIH/NIAID-funded resource that supplies living filarial parasites, molecular reagents, and standard protocols to researchers worldwide.
